Aloe Vera

- What you need to know about your Aloe Vera plant

Aloe Vera is famous for its healing properties - but it's also a decorative plant with a beautiful sculptural look and a bright green color that stays beautiful all year round.

Aloe Vera is a beautiful plant that is also very easy to care for

Aloe Vera is a robust little plant that can tolerate a little neglect. It has a beautiful shape with powerful pointed leaves that the plant stores liquid in. The liquid in the leaves is famous for its healing properties, and it's also this liquid that means the plant doesn't need frequent watering.

Botanical name

Aloe vera and Aloe barbadensis Miller.

Flowers

Aloe Vera grows tall flowers on erect leafless shoots. The flowers stand as spikes at the end of the stems and are cylindrical in brilliant red, yellow or yellow-orange colors. The flowering period is typically in summer but depends on growing conditions and the age of the plant.

Plant size

EasyCare Plants offers Aloe Vera plants in pot sizes of 6 and 11 cm. The plant can grow up to 50 cm high.

Tips for looking after and caring for your Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera thrives in well-drained sandy soil and is generally very adaptable.

Watering: Water sparingly - how often depends on the size of the pot and the heat, but can typically be watered about every 2 weeks. The soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings.

Light: Thrives in a location with plenty of light, but should be spared strong direct sun.

Temperature: Aloe Vera can't tolerate frost, but thrives in temperatures of around 18-26 degrees.

How to propagate an Aloe Vera plant

You can't take cuttings from an Aloe Vera - but a healthy plant will multiply via many small side shoots (small new shoots that emerge from the ground next to the mother plant). The small shoots are easy to separate from the main plant: you can carefully pick them up and put them in new pots - that way you can get more plants.

Did you know?

Aloe Vera has been a popular and beloved plant for thousands of years. Its medicinal properties are described in both Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Although it is one of the most popular plants in the beauty industry, many of the species in the same plant family have healing properties. The medicinal properties are still being researched. The Aloe Vera plant is represented in the Palm House in the Botanical Garden, and you can read about recent studies of the plant on the Natural History Museum of Denmark website.
