Sansevieria ‘Hahnii’ (Bird’s Nest Sansevieria) is a compact and decorative houseplant that stands out for its short, broad leaves, which grow in a dense rosette resembling a bird’s nest—hence the name Bird’s Nest. Its compact size makes it ideal for windowsills, shelves, and small tables.

The plant grows slowly from a strong root system and, over time, forms small side shoots that develop into new leaf rosettes. After a few years, it can form a beautiful, dense clump with several rosettes. Sansevieria 'Hahnii’ Bird's Nest is a dwarf variety of the classic mother-in-law’s tongue (Dracaena trifasciata). 
It is native to West Africa, where the species grows in dry, warm areas with well-drained soil. As a succulent, the plant stores water in its thick leaves, making it extremely drought-tolerant.

A distinctive feature of Sansevieria 'Hahnii’ Bird's Nest is its ability to thrive under a wide range of lighting conditions. It is also known for being one of the hardiest and most undemanding houseplants, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced plant owners. Although the plant grows slowly, it requires very little care and can easily withstand periods when it is forgotten to be watered.

Fun fact 

Sansevieria 'Hahnii' Bird's Nest is known for its unique ability to absorb CO₂ at night. For this reason, the plant has been part of NASA’s research into plants for closed environments and future space travel. As part of a healthy indoor environment, the plant can serve as a natural supplement, but it obviously cannot replace proper ventilation, which remains the most effective way to ensure a fresh indoor environment.

Care

These plants can survive for 30 days without light or water

Sansevieria 'Hahnii' Bird's Nest is one of the easiest houseplants to care for. It is drought-tolerant, requires only occasional watering, and thrives in a wide range of lighting conditions. The most important thing is to avoid overwatering and frost.

 Watering
Water sparingly when the soil is dry all the way down to the bottom of the pot, typically every 2–4 weeks depending on the season and location.
Avoid keeping the soil constantly moist, as the roots can easily rot if overwatered.
In winter, reduce watering even further, as the plant grows very slowly and has low water requirements.

Location
Place the plant in a bright spot with indirect light for best growth.
It also thrives in partial shade and can tolerate relatively low light levels, but will grow more slowly.
It can tolerate a few hours of direct morning or evening sun, but should be protected from harsh midday sun through window glass.

Temperature
Sansevieria 'Hahnii' Bird's Nest thrives best at temperatures between 18 and 30 °C and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10 °C.
It has no special requirements regarding humidity and thrives well in normal indoor air.

Fertilizer
From March through September, fertilize with liquid fertilizer for green plants every 6–8 weeks.
Fertilize sparingly, as the plant has modest nutrient requirements.
Do not fertilize during the winter, when growth is minimal.

Potting Mix All of our Sansevieria 'Hahnii' Bird’s Nest plants are grown in sphagnum-free coconut coir—a more sustainable alternative to traditional potting mix containing sphagnum peat. The coconut coir also has an airy structure, which allows the roots to breathe and thrive better.

Sizes, Age, and Lifespan

At EasyCare, Sansevieria Hahnii ‘Bird’s Nest’ is available in two sizes: pots measuring Ø6 and Ø9 cm. The plants are about one year old when sold, and with the right care, they can live for years. Over time, they produce many offshoots, which can be separated from the mother plant and planted in new pots.

Origin and Habitat
The species is native to:
Nigeria, Congo, Ghana.
It grows naturally in dry, tropical areas with well-drained soil, where it is adapted to long periods of drought and high temperatures.

Appearance
A compact, evergreen succulent with a dense rosette of short, broad, and upright leaves.
The leaves are dark green with distinctive light green or silver-gray transverse bands. They grow in a tight spiral, giving the plant its characteristic bird’s nest shape.
Indoors, the plant typically grows to 15–25 cm tall and 20–30 cm wide, but over time it can form larger clumps through side shoots.
