Tropical Fern
Asplenium

Asplenium is a genus of ferns, also called Tropical Fern. They are popular as houseplants because they have lush, glossy leaves and thrive in normal indoor climates.
Characteristics
- Long, wavy or whole leaves in fresh green shades
- No flowers - they reproduce via spores (typically on the underside of the leaves)
- Tropical origin → loves heat and humidity
Location
Asplenium is not a fan of direct sun, but still wants good light.
Best location:
- Bright room with indirect light
- Perfect for bathrooms due to high humidity
- Can also be placed some distance inside the room near a window
Avoid:
- Bright, direct sun (causes sweaty leaves)
- Drafts and cold windows in winter
- Very dark corners (causes limp and dull growth)
Watering
Asplenium likes even humidity - but not to soak in water.
- Keep the soil slightly moist at all times
- Water when the top layer of soil feels dry
- Use low-calcium water (rainwater is a luxury for it)
Tip:
Avoid pouring water directly into the center of the plant ("nest") - it can cause rot.
Air humidity
This plant loves humid air!
- Spray the leaves lightly a few times a week
- Place it on a tray with water and leca
- Perfect plant for the kitchen or bathroom
Dry air can cause brown leaf tips.
Temperature
- Thrives best at 18-24°C
- Do not expose to temperatures below 12-15°C
Fertilization
- Fertilize lightly during the growing season (spring/summer) approximately every 3-4 weeks
- Use regular green plant fertilizer at half strength
- No or very little fertilizer in winter
Care and maintenance
- Remove old or damaged leaves at the base
- Wipe leaves gently to remove dust (no leaf shine)
